Did you remember the umbrella?

No, I’m not talking about the one to keep you out of the rain, but rather the one that protects you in a worst-case scenario! An umbrella insurance policy can range from $1 to $5 million and covers losses that related to bodily injury and property damage that exceed your auto and/or homeowners liability limits.

Let’s look at some examples of what an umbrella covers you for:

  • Broad personal injury coverage that includes protection for claims such as libel or slander —even online, such as a lawsuit resulting from a post on social media
  • Coverage when you rent a watercraft, ATV or scooter on vacation
  • Protection for unforeseen situations, like having an auto accident in another country
  • Protection against liability for certain claims resulting from a your role as a director/officer of a non-profit
  • Legal defense costs, regardless if you win or lose, for all claims covered by the umbrella
  • And personal defense coverage, if someone sues after being injured while you are protecting yourself or your property

The thing that’s also great about umbrella policies is that they are affordable. On average, and depending on your specific situation, you’ll see the premiums between $150-$300 for personal coverage over top of your home and auto policies.
